Just vote

Fresh when it gets here from Julie Barrett

Time simply flies when you're not having fun. Yesterday I got started on some notes for NaNoWriMo and ended up getting pretty well waylaid by what may or may not be a complication from the surgery. It's not major ... just very uncomfortable. I'm keeping an eye on it today. No temp, so I think this is something that will fall into the category of Major Inconvenience.

I've been watching the furor over John Kerry's remarks with interest. I did get the point he was trying to make, but he made it badly. And it didn't help that he let the spin doctors on both sides get hold of his remarks before he came out and apologized. I'm not a fan of Kerry, but this is so overblown it's not even funny. It was a very poor choice of words, and he should have apologized sooner, and I suspect he knows it.

I'm still making up my mind on a couple of elections. The one thing I will say is that my vote won't be confined to a single party. I wish my state would put an end to straight party voting. To check a box, flip a switch, punch a hole, or press a button on a touchscreen requires little effort. If you've really given thought to your choices, then take the time to vote, even if you check every single box for the "R" or "D" candidate.

Folks, one reason the same idiots in both parties keep getting re-elected is that too many of us don't think our votes will make a difference. Let's prove 'em wrong this year. If you think the incumbent is doing a good job (and I do in at least one race in my state) then vote. But dang it, don't sit around griping about the idiots in office if you can't be bothered to at least get out and attempt to change the status quo. Change can only happen when people are willing to make the effort.

Wow, I got off on a tangent there. I shouldn't read the Letters to the Editor page first thing in the morning, should I?

Today is an early release at school, so I need to spend the next couple of hours bleeding, I mean, writing for NaNo. I'll keep you updated on my progress.

Good luck with the inconvenience and NaNoWriMo. I miss the occasional primary or bond election, but I've never, ever missed the first Tuesday in November since I was first eligible in 1975. Here a well-liked Republican is retiring from the House (even I have voted for him), and he didn't endorse the Republican primary winner, a Minuteman-type. Interesting race.
