San Francisco
We did San Francisco, or rather, San Francisco did us in. How much of the city could we do in a day? To be fair, this wasn't our first trip there, but it had been a while. Cameras had much improved, and we wanted photos!
After breakfast at the hotel, we took a cable car to the North Beach area, and then from there thought it would be just peachy to walk to Golden Gate Park. Spock might have asked us what the hell we were thinking. It wasn't just the distance. Google Maps was confused. Why not get a ride? We'd seen the Waymo cars on the streets, and thought that we should try one, just to see what it was like.
Waymo, for those who don't know, is a driverless taxi service. Paul installed the app and called for a ride. We were whisked in the comfort of a Jaguar, complete with kind of trippy music on the sound system. Relax, it's okay!
Turns out it was. The Waymo cars are covered in sensors, and apparently they only go to places that have been thoroughly mapped by their system. We felt quite safe.
We hung around the park for a bit, then decided to go to the official vantage point for the Golden Gate Bridge. Again, we took a Waymo. When we got out of the car, we were the tourist attraction. People were snapping photos of the car and asking questions about the experience. Would we do it agan? After snapping our share of pictures, we did, to a little dim sum place in Chinatown, then back to the hotel after lunch. It was time for Paul's phone to run out of juice.
After a rest and recharge we had drinks and appetizers downstairs. We had never had such generously portioned dim sum.
Then it was back upstairs to pack for the trip home.
The trip was Tuesday, and we are pleased to say it was uneventful. It's taken several days to recover.
Would we do this type of trip again? We might, but it would be to a different location. The train is a great way to see the scenery without the stress of driving.
