Weekend Assignment: DIY

Fresh (almost) daily from Julie Barrett

There are times when we hire professionals to build or fix things for us, and other times when we attempt the job ourselves. Some people pride themselves on their DIY skills or electronics geekery, while others leave it to the experts as much as possible. How about you? Is your first instinct to call for help, or do it yourself?

We prefer the DYI route, but hope we know when to leave it to the experts.

We have a couple of projects going this weekend. One is the continuing redo of the office closet. Paul is building shelves. This is one of those jobs where we're constrained by the weather as the pieces of wood need to be cut outdoors. No pictures, because all I have is an empty closet.

The other project is our Catmas card, which I just finished designing. They're now being printed. Well, I have about ten copies done and now I'm low on ink. Printing will recommence tomorrow.

Chris pulled his laptop computer apart a couple of times in the last week to fix a loose wire.

But generally, yes. We do a lot of DIY - from fixing our own cars and computers to a bit of plumbing and carpentry. We do call a plumber for some things and do take the car to the mechanic for more complex repairs. I did help swap a transmission on a car once, but that was back when I was about the age Chris is now.

Extra Credit: Have you ever regretted taking on a task best left to the professionals?

Oh, all the time. But we're masochists. We push on.

I knew you did all the computer-related stuff yourself, but it's interesting that the whole family does DIY across the board - presumably unless to do so would be clearly insane. Thanks!
