Weekend Assignment and Other Convention Ramblings

I'm still snowed under, but I told myself I was going to stop and do the Weekend Assignment for this week:

What is the most unusual candidate you have ever supported, either seriously or in jest?

For years I wore a Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Bill the Cat T-shirt. It got laughs from both sides of the political fence.

Before I was old enough to vote I was a proud supporter of Alfred E. Neuman. What? Me worry?

Extra Credit: Have you ever regretted voting for a candidate, in light of later events? In a Congressional election, yes. The last few years I've voted heavily Libertarian because I honestly didn't think either major party candidate was the lesser evil. This may be the first year in a long time that I vote for a candidate that actually stands a chance of winning. I hope I don't regret that vote.

So, other convention musings. Everyone is writing about last night, so I won't dwell on it other than to remark that if Gore had spoken with that kind of passion eight years ago he probably would have won. I was watching the election coverage on PBS, and one of the commentators noted that Gore was a perfect example of what happens when the consultants get hold of a politician. I liked Obama's speech, but it seemd that it took a long time for him to get on fire.

I have some convention memorabilia from 1984, and I guess I should dig that out. The Republican National Convention was held in Dallas that year. Of course, Regan was a done deal, as we say in these parts. I was working for a local radio station at the time and got to cover the event. On one hand, it was a lot like being at any convention or trade show - lots of people with badges wandering around, people giving talks, that sort of thing. But I suspect you don't normally find the Secret Service out in force at a trade show, unless the president or a candidate for office is speaking. The one memory that stands out from that week is that I'd cracked a wrist a couple of weeks before the event and had to wear a metal splint. Loads o' fun at the metal detectors! I can't imagine trying to get through airport security these days wearing one of those things.

Lots to do before the holiday weekend kicks in. I'm going to try very hard to catch up on work so I can actually take a holiday for a change. Go ahead and laugh. You know how these plans work out as well as I!
