Sometimes, the Little Guy (or Girl) Comes Out Okay

I found a pleasant surprise in my P.O. Box today: a small check representing the last bit of blood from a proverbial turnip.
Just a little over a year ago a long-term client of mine went under. Of course, I'd just turned in an invoice, but it was too late. I've had clients go under before. I've had 'em "forget" to pay, or plead poverty only to turn around and spend vast quantities of money on something else. This client was well and truly kaput. At that point I just kind of shrugged my shoulders and figured I would be out the money.
I think I've written about this before, but the company had some major corporations among their unsecured creditors, and they got together on behalf of ALL of the creditors in an attempt to get some of what they were owed. I appreciate this because it probably would have cost me far more than I was owed to hire an attorney, at which point I may have seen less than 10 percent of what I was owed. Sure, a little bit of my settlement went to their law firm, but it's a heck of a lot less than I'd have paid on my own. And I suppose they could have decided to screw the little guys.
Don't worry: I have patronized these companies. It's the least I could do. And I'm glad for one small bit of good news in an otherwise dismal economic year.
