Welcome to

Stately Barrett Manor

New York

Many of these pictures date to WWII.

Fort Slocum YMCA

Fort Slocum YMCA

Fort Slocum was situated on Davids Island, which is part of New Rochelle, NY. One of our relatives was stationed there during part of WWII.

I found it interesting that while the postmark clearly said FORT SLOCUM, the name of the fort had been scratched out.

Here is a photographic archive of the area from the New York Heritage.

Also, a from Untapped New York.

Bird's Eye View, Sailor's Snug Harbor, Staten Island, N. Y.

This was a place for aged sailors to go live out their days, funded by a bequest. It is now a cultural center and botanical garden.

Here's a history.

Tavern On The Green, New Dorp, Staten Island

Tavern On The Green, New Dorp, Staten Island

Not the one in Central Park, and owned by different people.

It was definitely a place to see and be seen, though. It burned down in 1977.

Times Square, New York City

On the back:

Times Square, called by many the center of the world, after dark becomes a dazzling fairyland of flashing brilliance and color. This is the heart of the "Great White Way" and the playground of the nation. On the left are the Paramount Building and Hotel Astor.

On the back:

DOWNTOWN SKYLINE

As seen from the Staten Island Ferry, New York's famed skyscrapers make a truly impressive sight. These buildings, with their towers which pierce the sky, compromise the greatest Finaincial District in the world.

Which just happens to be the subject of the next card.

Grand Central Terminal And New York Central Building, New York

Grand Central Terminal And New York Central Building, New York

On the back:

GRAND CENTERAL TERMINAL, NEW YORK CENTRAL BUILDING

Grand central Terminal on 42nd Street between Vanderbilt and Lexington Avenues. The largest and most costly terminal station in the world. Has a capacity of 200 trains and 70,000 passengers an hour and is the terminal of the New York Central lines and the N. Y., N. H., and Hartford R. R. Covers and area of 70 acres and has 42 tracks for express trains and 25 tracks for suburban trains. Park Avenue traffic goes directly through the New York Central building on ramps that risde to viaducts passing around Grand Central terminal above the cross-town traffic.

That bit of green is why it was called Park Avenue, from what I've read. Expansion of the traffic lanes has brought that green area down to just a median now.
