The one thing I've missed the most since moving to the 64-bit system was my main scanner - an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo. This is one sweet scanner, although it's a few years old. Of course, Epson has decided not to offer XP 64-bit support for this scanner. The only other option appeared to be to purchase a new scanner. I'm not happy to spend $200 on something that appears to be functionally identical. The main difference seems to be updated drivers.

A couple of months ago I found a post to a message board from someone who had figured out the magic incantation to get the thing to work. Of course, I couldn't do it right, so I went back to my Brother scanner. Now that I'm scanning in more cookbooks, I'm frustrated with the quality. This prompted me to go back and revisit the scanner issue. Darned if I didn't get it to work this time! The process required much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Of course, Epson's excellent TWAIN drivers don't work with this. And when I try to install the updated TWAIN drivers, Windows tries to repair ActiveSync. WTF? On the original CD that came with the scanner (yeah, I'm amazed to have found it) there is a program called SilverFast. It's a really cool TWAIN replacement, and it works!

So now I have my scanner back. Joy!

There will be Nostalgia updates forthcoming.
